One · The route

The route, stop by stop

A loop from the airport and back: first the red dunes of Sossusvlei, then three nights on the Atlantic at Swakopmund, and a last night among Spitzkoppe's granite.

The longest drives are the first day and the day to the coast, about 4½ hours each, so a flight that lands by early afternoon gets you to the lodge before dark. Your guide drives, so the long roads are yours to take in and enjoy.

Two · Where you'll stay

3 stops, one vehicle

The three places you chose in the planner, one at each stop. If you would like any of them swapped for something simpler or grander, tell us and we rework it.

Agama Lodge stands on the open plains outside the park, under an hour from the dunes, with the desert running out to the mountains in every direction. Dinners are served in the thatched main lodge, and the night sky out here is about as dark as it gets.

Your days here
  • Fri 1 JanYour guide meets you at the airport and drives you into the Namib. Dinner at the lodge.
  • Sat 2 JanOut before sunrise into Sossusvlei with your guide: climb a red dune, walk into Deadvlei among its dead camelthorn trees, and have your lunch pack in the shade. Back at the lodge before the afternoon heat.
Included
  • 2 nights, dinner and breakfast
  • Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, led by your guide
  • A lunch pack on the dune day
  • Park entry for you, your guide and the vehicle

The Strand Hotel sits on the Mole, Swakopmund's old sea wall, with the Atlantic on three sides and the town's cafés a short walk away. After the desert it is a change of pace: cool sea air, good restaurants, and nothing you have to drive to. Your guide goes home in the evenings here, but is always available to drive you around.

Your days here
  • Sun 3 JanAcross the desert to the coast. The afternoon and evening are yours in town.
  • Mon 4 JanSandwich Harbour by 4x4 with our licensed guide, where the dunes run straight into the sea, with lunch. Sandboarding, if you'd like to add it, at no extra cost.
  • Tue 5 JanA morning catamaran on the bay at Walvis Bay, for dolphins, seals and pelicans. The afternoon is free.
Included
  • 3 nights, breakfast
  • Sandwich Harbour 4x4 half-day, permit and lunch included
  • Dolphin and seal catamaran cruise
  • Your guide on call to drive you around

Other lunches and dinners in Swakopmund are your own, and the town is made for it: Café Anton, The Jetty, the Altstadt and the Brauhaus, or the Strand's own restaurants. It is busy over the New Year holidays, so we book your dinners ahead.

Spitzkoppen Lodge's chalets stand on stilts among the boulders below the Gross Spitzkoppe, the peak known as the Matterhorn of Namibia. The rock glows orange at sunset, and the night sky is one of the darkest we know.

Your days here
  • Wed 6 JanA short drive inland. Sunset on the rock, then dinner. We recommend the lodge’s guided walk among the granite, booked at reception when you arrive.
  • Thu 7 JanBreakfast with the peak in view, then back to the airport for your flight home, about 3½ to 4 hours.
Included
  • 1 night, dinner and breakfast
  • Spitzkoppe entry fees
  • Drop-off at the airport on Thu 7 Jan

Four · Why we built it this way

The days, and the rooms

Desert & Coast is Namibia's three great landscapes in one unhurried week. Two nights at the dunes mean the Sossusvlei morning is never rushed; three at the coast give Sandwich Harbour and the catamaran a day each, with time left over for the town; and one night at Spitzkoppe breaks the road home with sunset on the granite. The stays are the ones you picked: Agama for the open desert around it, the Strand for being right on the water in town, and Spitzkoppen Lodge for the peak on your doorstep.

Five · What is included

Everything above, in one list

Everything marked as included in this itinerary is inside the price. This is that list in full, so there is nothing to work out from the pages above.

  • Agama Lodge, Sossusvlei: 2 nights, Standard Chalet
  • Strand Hotel, Swakopmund: 3 nights, Standard Room
  • Spitzkoppen Lodge: 1 night, chalet

What you eat

  • Dinner at Agama Lodge and Spitzkoppen Lodge
  • A lunch pack on the dune day, and lunch at Sandwich Harbour

  • A private vehicle, with fuel

What you do

  • Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, led by your guide
  • Sandwich Harbour 4x4 half-day with our licensed guide
  • Sandboarding, if you'd like to add it, at no extra cost
  • Dolphin and seal catamaran cruise

Fees

  • Park entry at Sossusvlei
  • Sandwich Harbour permit
  • Spitzkoppe entry fees

Bring your passports. The fees are paid, but Namibian park gates require photographic identification from every visitor on the way in and on the way out. That applies at Sossusvlei on Sat 2 January. Keep them in the vehicle rather than in a case.

Six · Not included

What sits outside it

  • International flights to and from Windhoek
  • Namibian entry requirements and any visa fees
  • Lunches and dinners in Swakopmund
  • Any nights in Windhoek before or after the trip
  • Gratuities are at your discretion: as a guideline, from US$20 per person per day for your guide, in cash, and US$10–20 per person per night for the lodge staff
  • Recommended: Spitzkoppen Lodge’s guided walk among the granite (about US$28 per person, booked and paid at the lodge on arrival)
  • Drinks, other than those named in this itinerary
  • Travel insurance and personal expenses
Seven · The season

High summer, hot inland, cool at the coast

January is high summer. Sossusvlei is hot by late morning, so the dune day starts before sunrise and you are back in the shade by midday. The coast is the opposite: Swakopmund often wakes up to fog and stays mild all day. Inland, an afternoon thunderstorm is possible. Pack light summer clothes, a hat, sunblock and closed shoes for the dunes, and a warm layer for the coast and the evenings. New Year's Day, Fri 1 January, is a public holiday, and the coast is busy that week with Namibian families on holiday.

Eight · What happens now

What happens now?

This is your look book, made to be changed. Three steps take it from here to booked.

01

You review it

Look at the price, the lodges and the days. New Year is a busy week in Namibia, so the sooner we hear from you, the better our chances of these exact lodges. Once your dates are firm and you've accepted the look book, we place holds with every lodge.

02

You come back to us

Reply to our email and tell us what you are happy with and what you would change: a different lodge, more or less luxury. We finalise the itinerary.

03

Payment in full confirms it

The final itinerary comes with a date to accept by. Because you travel within 60 days, there is no deposit stage: once you accept, paying the full amount confirms the entire booking.

Subject to availability

Every property is subject to availability until your payment is in. If one cannot be secured we replace it with one of the same standard and ask you first, and if the replacement costs more, we carry the difference.

Details to be confirmed Tell us what to change

Please respond with your preference: lodge swap-outs, a more or less luxurious option. Our goal is to perfect the trip for you.
